Football Facts:

Some people believe football is a matter of life and death. I assure you, it’s much more serious than that” – Bill Shankley

Although we wouldn’t go quite that far Bill Shankley was a legendary Liverpool FC manager and football remains the undisputed, most popular, and influential sport on the planet. Football is also often described as the beautiful game and by football we mean Association Football, which is also known as Soccer NOT American football, Australian rules football nor Gaelic football – you’ll have to look elsewhere for those football facts.

Football Facts And Astounding Footie Trivia

Soccer is the most popular sport in the world with some 250 million players, China alone has around 26 million, closely followed by the USA with around 24 million. The USA has the highest number of registered female players worldwide. The numbers of players pales in comparison to the number of viewers. It’s estimated that over 3 billion people (not far off half the population of the world) watched at least some of the last World Cup match in South Africa.

Most people credit Victorian England with the invention of football, but the ancient Greeks were already kicking something around in a game called Episkyros, and there’s even an English version which began back in the 8th century.
The modern Football League was founded in England in 1888 with 12 teams, Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Preston North End never lost in this first ever season and became champions. Stoke came last.
