In China alone there are around 26 million players, closely followed by the USA who have the highest number of registered female players anywhere in the world. Victorian England is generally credited with inventing association football (soccer) as we recognize it today. However the ancient Greeks used to kick something around in a game called Episkyros – and there’s an English version of that game dating back to the 8th century.

The first Football League season took place England during 1888-89 with 12 teams: Accrington, Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Bolton Wanderers, Burnley, Derby County, Everton, Notts County, Preston North End, Stoke, West Bromwich Albion and Wolverhampton Wanderers. Amazingly, Preston North End were unbeaten over 22 games – a feat which was not repeated until Arsenal won the Premier League 2003-04 season over 38 games.
