Nobel Prize Winners in Science List 1901-2019

If I have a thousand ideas and only one turns out to be good, I am satisfied – Alfred Nobel

Nobel is said to have instigated the Nobel awards after reading an obituary of his life, while he was still alive, which read: The merchant of death is dead.. Keen to be remembered in a better light, Nobel donated the bulk of his estate to setting up the awards. Nobel prize winners for Physics, Chemistry and Medicine or Physiology have been awarded to scientists that make the most outstanding contributions to mankind since 1901. Nobel prizes are usually announced during October and awarded on Nobel day (10th December), the anniversary of the founder’s death.

List of Famous Scientists That Were NOT Nobel Prize Winners

Famous Scientists That Were NOT Nobel Prize Winners:

Nobel Prize Awards can be as contentious as they are prestigious. Nobel Prizes are rarely awarded posthumously and historically women have not fared well. Judges in any competition are only human with their own biases and prejudices and then there’s just unlucky bad timing. ADDucation is pleased to highlight a handful of famous scientists that didn’t win a Noble prize.

  • Dimitri Mendeleev: (1834-1907) Russian chemist.
Mendeleev was an inventor and chemist whose periodic law and work on the periodic table helped predict chemical elements that had not yet been discovered. Mendeleev was nominated for the 1906 Nobel Prize in Chemistry but died in 1907 without that honor.
  • Gilbert Newton Lewis: (1875-1946) American chemist.
Lewis came up with the concept of covalent bonding which deepened our understanding of how chemical bonding works. He also produced the first heavy water molecule and coined to term photon. Lewis was nominated for a Noble prize 35 times between 1922 and 1935 without winning. Bias is suspected.
  • Annie Jump Cannon: (1863-1941) American astronomer.
Cannon was one of “Pickering’s Harem” a team of women hired by Edward Pickering at the Harvard Observatory. They collectively mapped and classified every star in the sky. Cannon came up with a classification system which categorised stars based on spectral absorption lines.
  • Chien-Shiung Wu: (1912-1947) American physicist.
Wu became famous for her “Wu experiment” which disproved the widely accepted “Parity Law” proving that nature is “handed”. Her work led to two male colleagues Tsung-Dao Lee and Chen Ning Yang winner the 1957 Nobel Prize in Physics. Several nicknames stuck; “First Lady of Physics”, “Chinese Madame Curie” and “Queen of Nuclear Research”.
