After researching this list of common phobias we’re feeling a little Phobophobic (which is a phobia of phobias). Phobia comes from the Greek god Phobos meaning aversion which describes the fear and dread of particular situations or objects. Most common types of phobias often seem irrational to outsiders but are very real to sufferers.

  • Social phobias: Fear of social situations, for example public speaking or public performances and the fear of public embarrassment.
  • Agoraphobia: Fear of being alone in a public place or social situation where help won’t be available if needed. Which can give rise to symptoms from anxiety and panic attacks and commonly leads to avoidance, ultimately by staying at home.
  • Specific phobias: can be sub-divided into:
    • Animal phobias: Animals (cats, dogs, chickens etc.), Insects (spiders, wasps, bees, ants etc.), reptiles (snakes, toads, etc.), birds etc.
    • Environmental phobias: Thunder and lightning, storms, water, tornadoes etc.
    • Medical phobias: Cancer, blood, injections, visiting a doctor, dentist etc.
    • Situational phobias: Leaving home, fear of heights, flying, driving etc.
    • Other phobias: Objects, colors, nationalities etc.
